Dr. Kaufman received his bachelor's degree in biology from the University of Southern California, after which he attended medical school at the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine in Hyde Park, Illinois. He performed his internship and residency in ophthalmology at the Chicago Osteopathic Hospital and St. James Hospital in Olympia Fields, and completed his ophthalmology training with a fellowship in Cornea and External Disease at the University of Illinois at Chicago Eye Center. Dr. Kaufman is a Board Certified Ophthalmologist.
After training medical students and residents in ophthalmology for 15 years, he joined Dr. Briggs' practice in Dyer full-time. This practice setting has allowed Dr. Kaufman to pursue his interests of dry eye, ocular surface healing disorders, and corneal infections, and affords Dr. Kaufman the time necessary to discuss disease processes clearly to his patients so that they can make educated decisions regarding their course of treatment. The health of the patient as a whole is considered, as underlying diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, thyroid imbalance, skin disorders and allergies can have a major impact on the success in treating eye diseases that are Dr. Kaufman's specialty.
Dr. Kaufman is also well versed in general ophthalmology, evaluating patients with glaucoma, visual complaints, and diabetes. Dr. Kaufman is one of the only practitioners in the area who makes eye drops from the patient's own blood (autologous serum drops) in the treatment of advanced dry eye, and infections and chemical burns through the use of sutureless amniotic membrane grafting.
